Alumnae Athletic Hall of Fame

The Athletic Hall of Fame Award is given to a Springside alumna who, the committee agrees, has made an outstanding contribution to athletics while attending Springside, and has continued to contribute or participate in a significant way to athletics after leaving school. The award and the framed Photographs of the recipients are provided through a fund established in honor of Lois Fernley McNeil, Class of 1936.

2009 Recipient: Nina Talbot Robertson '86

For Nina Talbot Robertson '86 athleticism comes to her honestly through a long line of athletically gifted relatives. In fact, the DNA is so strong that she is the 4th “Knowles” woman to be inducted into Springside’s Athletic Hall of Fame. At Springside, Sylvia was an outstanding varsity field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse player, as well as president of the Athletic Board. At the same time, and perhaps most indicative of her athletic ability, she made quite a name for herself outside of school playing tennis and squash, which she continued to do throughout her life. The second of Springside's two recipients of the 2007 Athletic Hall of Fame Award was Babbie Benson Nalle Wetherill '42. Although Babbie excelled at all sports at Springside, she won this award for her stellar golf career, for forging the way for women in the 40s and 50s in the golf world, and for being a role model for Springside's new golf team. Bobbie Morris Turman, Class of 1922, is one of two recipients of the 2006 Athletic Hall of Fame award. We were delighted that Molly joined us for the ceremony as she had just celebrated her 102nd birthday a week before and she was our oldest alumna! Bobbie's daughter Betsy Turman Ervin '50 called us in September to say that Bobbie had passed away but that she was thrilled to have received this award. We were equally thrilled to honor this wonderful alumna!

Not only did Liz have a stellar career in high school athletics, dominating the lacrosse draw position, anchoring the field hockey midfield, running faster and harder than anyone else out there, she has gone on to have an important and distinguished career with athletics.

2003 Recipient: Sally Deaver Murray '51

In the 1958 Word Championships in Bad Gastein, Austria, Sally surprised the international world of skiing and delighted her American teammates by coming in second place in the Giant Slalom. She is quoted as saying, "The only way to win a race is to take every chance and hope that you are lucky. You have to push yourself just a little further than you think you can go. There's no point in trying for fifth or sixth. You have to think about coming in first."

2002 Recipient: Patricia Kenworthy Nuckols '39

Pat credits her parents for giving her the gift of good coordination and for giving her great encouragement. She is also thankful to Miss Vare (Springside Athletic Director 1937-1968) who she says "taught us not only how to play the game but how to enjoy it and that sportsmanship was the most important part of all competition."
