Recycle Ready with RecycleBank
Partnering with RecycleBank of Philadelphia, Springside launched a schoolwide recycling initiative on Thursday, September 22. RecycleBank piloted its visionary coupons-for-recycling program in Chestnut Hill in January 2005. Since that time Springside's Scott Stein, Chair of the Science Department, has led the charge to make Springside the first school in the city to recycle all paper, plastic, glass, metal, and cardboard. Poised with over 100 collection carts, students and faculty will be responsible for emptying the bins on a regular basis. The recycle program has quickly been incorporated into the culture of both the school and the classroom. For example, over the past three weeks, Dr. Eberle-Wang's class has collected and measured waste to document what might have been placed into the waste stream and will now be recycled.

On launch day, Ecofashion Model Summer Rayne Oakes was also at school to share with students her Ecofashion 101 curriculum which has as its goal "sustainability education" - to develop in young people and their teachers new ways of thinking needed to achieve economic prosperity...while regenerating the health of the ecosystems. Summer Rayne Oakes' passion for environmental consciousness and youth outreach has led her to a position as a United Nations U.S. Partnership Youth Emissary.

RecycleBank's education initiative is partially sponsored by Coca-Cola through the donation of RecycleBank dollars by residents in Philadelphia.
